Trauma and other therapy modalities
It is very important to find the right therapist for yourself but it is also important to find the right type of therapy. Often times, clients will come to therapy looking for a certain type of therapy. Though it is always important to make this decision jointly with your therapist, at KD Counseling & Consulting, we want you to be equipped to ask the questions and explore what may be offered in the therapy space.

Therapeutic Modalities
KD Counseling & Consulting practices a variety of cognitive-based therapies as well as trauma body-based therapies. Please see below for more information on each therapeutic modality and feel free to ask your therapist to provide additional information as needed.
-
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the most commonly used type of therapy. You will work with your therapist on changing negative or unhelpful thought patterns. The main focus is on how your thoughts, feeling, and actions connect. The goal is to change your behavior and improve how you feel.
-
DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) is another talk based and skill learning therapy that can help most people. The 4 main components of DBT are: Mindfulness; Distress Tolerance; Emotional Regulation; and Relationship (Interpersonal) skills. The word “dialectical” means balancing opposites: learning to accept your life as it is while also working to change unhelpful behaviors.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This form of therapy helps people heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. EMDR does not require talking in detail. It is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic or distressing memories in the brain. EMDR has been extensively researched and has demonstrated great effectiveness for trauma.

Brainspotting or BSP, is another trauma based therapy tool. The therapist and client locate specific eye positions in the client’s visual field to access, process, and release deep-seated trauma, emotional pain, and body stress stored in the subcortical brain. Brainspotting bypasses conscious thought to target the brain’s deeper emotional and sensory centers directly.
